What Authors Can and Cannot Copyright

Introduction

You're writing a book and you aren't sure what you can or cannot copyright. Or, you've already written a book and are ready to submit it to editors and agents. Either way, you want to make sure your rights are protected under United States copyright law and that you are not infringing upon copyright laws or upon other laws that relate to publishing.

Your Book

Under U.S. copyright law, you can copyright your manuscript. Technically, anything you write is automatically copyrighted, but if someone steals your work and presents it as his own, you must then prove that you are the creator of that work and that you own the copyright to it. This is not necessarily easy to prove. It makes more sense to copyright your manuscript before you publish it. To do this, register your work with the U.S. Copyright Office by completing an application form from the copyright office and then send in the required filing fee. ...
