WSJ: Read Me an E-Book Story?

I'm a recent but devoted convert to the e-book revolution. As much as I love paper books, the idea of curling up with a plastic slate rather than soft-bound pages no longer fazes me, and I feel more well-rounded carrying around all the literary classics that I one day hope to read.

But could I make the leap to children's e-books with my 1- and 3-year-old daughters? In case you haven't seen one since kindergarten, kids' books are different. They have pictures. Big letters. Sometimes the pages are laminated to withstand sippy-cup spills.

Despite the simplicity of children's books, their full color format didn't always translate to the small screen. Not long ago, you had to download illustrated books as apps to get a decent reading experience. But new, more robust e-book formats are letting publishers create electronic versions of illustrated books without compromise. This week Amazon released hundreds of children's titles designed for its new tablet, the Kindle Fire. Since last year, Apple's iBookstore has offered "enhanced" e-books with read-along narration. And Barnes & Noble currently carries more than 300 children's e-books, some with embedded games, for the Nook Color and the just-released Nook Tablet..............
