Examiner.com: Finding the meaning of Thanksgiving in America's secular world

 an immigrant, I had only a vague idea of what Thanksgiving Day is all about. It appeared to be a bigger holiday than Christmas Day with more days allotted away from work and school. It did not hold much meaning at first. Then I came across a children's book which my child was reading, The Magic Tree House #27: Thanksgiving on Thursday by Mary Pope Osborne. The Magic Tree House book series talk about two kids who time travels to different historical events using the magic books found inside the tree house. For this particular series, the kids went back in time to the first Thanksgiving celebration, which at that time was a three-day festival to celebrate a good harvest. It was a symbolic feast to celebrate not just the bounty of the produce of their crops but more so, to celebrate the better life that the Pilgrims had in the new land they occupied, a life blessed not just with abundance of food and harvest but a life blessed with the freedom to practice their religion. ...
