Books in Europe are missing a couple of digits

I'VE been thinking about the future of books. It's a contentious topic but while in Europe last week I couldn't help but notice that the only thing on people's minds about books was how to balance them.

As with any crisis, conspiracy theories abound and many seem to think that it's another Italian job in the Machiavellian tradition. They could have a point because, as I understand it, Niccolo Machiavelli seemed to be saying in his famous book The Prince that private and public morality had to be kept separate if one was to rule successfully. Obviously former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi was not a great reader.

But what is clear is that European governments are in trouble because of the very high level of debt that has grown over the years, with the principal exception of Germany, which could easily pay off the Greek debt itself by cancelling one day's supply of sauerkraut to Berlin restaurants. ...
